Matt “Flat” Black has been flying in the lead and wingman positions for over 28 years. He first learned to value people from his parents early in life. He continued to discover through hands on experiences and personal observations how valuing people can lead one to be a great leader and a great follower. His military career has spanned all aspects of leadership. He started as a young Second Lieutenant flying single seat fighters in Europe and rapidly moved from wingman to mission commander. During his career Flat had the privilege of commanding a 100 person test squadron. The squadron was highly successful with the Group Commander stating, “Clearly the top squadron commander in my group.”
Flat completed his military career in a most challenging assignment, testing the F-22 Raptor. In this job he slept very little while managing the Operational Test & Evaluation of the $74 billion F-22. He Commanded and supervised the test operations of over 100 man-years of military, civilian and contractor personnel at three different locations. The final result of this rigorous eight month long test was a report briefed to the highest levels in the military which led to Congress deciding to buy the F-22 and also to a good night’s sleep.
Now Flat works with a large defense contractor in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he has made a huge discovery. The same techniques which were successful in the military are also proving successful in his new profession. Flat knows how to lead and he knows how to follow. His passionate and humorous perspective is sure to capture your attention and will certainly help you to become a great wingman and a great leader from takeoff to landing.
